Protean

The Client

Protean Electric is an award-winning technology company that has developed an in-wheel electric drive system for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric light-duty vehicles. Protean’s head office is in Farnham, Surrey but they also have presence in the USA and China. They are set to rapidly expand in the coming months.

Protean were using a Microsoft Exchange solution which was due to go end of life. As Protean’s trusted IT provider and Microsoft Gold Partner, Blue Chip recommended the latest Exchange Server to replace the legacy version. The new Exchange solution was critical to Protean as it allowed them to move away from unsupported Microsoft products, reducing risk to their business. In addition, it allowed them to implement a scalable solution in line with future growth plans.

The Solution

To address these issues Blue Chip completed a major infrastructure refresh, which included the design and build of a new virtual environment within Protean’s VMware Infrastructure, to run Windows Server 2008 R2.  Microsoft Exchange 2013 was then created within this environment, with all user and email data migrated from the existing Exchange Server. This instance of Exchange was also configured to use Database Availability Groups (DAG) which would allow Protean to include additional servers at a later date.

Blue Chip also implemented the Microsoft Application Request Routing (ARR) service, allowing Protean to reverse publish their Exchange connection. This ARR Server replaced Microsoft Threat Management Gateway (TMG) which is also end of support.

Success and Company Benefits

Microsoft Exchange integrated well with Protean’s existing Microsoft products that were in use throughout the business. This has benefitted employees who have previous experience and familiarity with the Microsoft suite. Most importantly, the Exchange solution has eradicated risk due to unsupported software products. It has also allowed for future expansion within the business.
