Requirement: Desktop virtualisation and 2FA
Materials Solutions needed a secure and flexible desktop virtualisation platform to allow users in a variety locations to access company files.
Materials Solutions is the largest and most complete metals Additive Manufacturing facility commercially available. They work with many clients in the power generation business and their speciality is in producing high quality nickel superalloys and specialist steels.
Materials Solutions encourage Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) across the business and have deployed Citrix virtualisation technology to support this policy. Whilst this is an extremely flexible way of working, enabling users to select from a multitude of cross-platform devices and work from a variety of locations, they wanted to provide tighter levels of security for devices accessing their system from outside the network. Blue Chip recommended SecureAccess, its Two Factor Authentication Service which would provide an additional layer of protection at the log-on stage, effectively addressing these security concerns.
SecureAccess was installed on their existing Infrastructure as a Service platform (IaaS). This meant that employees using their own devices would receive an auto generated One Time Passcode (OTP) in order to log on to the system from outside the network. This authentication step is then verified using a dedicated SecureAcesss Management server to prevent accidental and unauthorised access should the device be lost or stolen.
The OTP generation is handled via the installation of a mobile app which is compatible with a number of handheld devices, including iOS, Blackberry, Android, and Windows Phone, or alternatively via traditional hardware tokens. The service has been designed to work alongside a wide variety of third party products including Citrix virtual desktops and numerous VPN appliances which made it an ideal deployment for Material Solutions, wherever their employees are based and whatever device they are using.
Success and Company Benefits
Not only did SecureAccess improve security for cross platform devices, Blue Chip was able to provide Materials Solutions with a flexible and scalable service that sits on their existing hosted infrastructure. Charged per user per month, expenditure is controlled, with minimal costs for provisioning additional users as and when required. In addition, they also benefit from no upfront or maintenance costs, alongside the other advantages associated with their IaaS offering.
Gordon Green, Director of Engineering at Material Solutions said, “With the number of attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in user authentication constantly increasing, SecureAccess provides Material Solutions with the added layer of security needed to minimise the risk to our business.”
