Requirement: Virtualisation Project
Emanuel School selected virtualisation expert Blue Chip to redesign their server infrastructure and improve their business continuity programme, as well as providing a secure and reliable backup and DR solution.
Emanuel School is a co-educational, independent school founded in 1594. Based in Battersea, South London, the school has grown in size to over 700 students and is one of the capital’s top performing schools in art, drama and music.
To ensure that the IT infrastructure could continue to support the needs of the students and staff, Emanuel adopted a virtualisation strategy which would consolidate the amount of physical servers, improve resilience to core services and improve the disaster recovery (DR) capabilities within the school.
Blue Chip ran a capacity-planning exercise which determined that a Microsoft Hyper-V based environment would best meet the school's requirements. A 3 physical node Hyper-V cluster of host servers to run the virtual machines, along with a backup to disk solution for their primary server room was then implemented. To cater for Emanuel’s disaster recovery needs, Blue Chip installed a second backup to disk target and a DR Host Server capable of running key servers in the event of the primary server room being unavailable.
Success and Company Benefit
The school now have a flexible and resilient primary server infrastructure that has the ability to scale as required, while the amount of physical server hardware on-premise has been reduced. Emanuel’s disaster recovery has also been significantly improved, offering the school peace of mind that key services will be available at all times.
Peter Joseph, network manager at Emanuel School comments, “As a school with an outstanding reputation, we required an IT system that can fully support the delivery of education. With Blue Chip’s skills, virtualising our servers has notably reduced the number of network issues, alleviated network management requirements and provided a robust DR solution in the event of IT failure. We are extremely pleased this project was completed on time and within budget, enabling our staff and pupils to continue to deliver excellence with minimum disruption.”
