Crescent Yamaha WorldSBK

Requirement: New Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution and Managed Service

Crescent Racing looked to their chosen IT partner to upgrade them from an on-premise infrastructure to Blue Chip’s Private Cloud Platform.

The Client

Crescent Racing has over 65 years' experience and knowledge in supplying the very best in motorcycles, parts, clothing, accessories and service support. Additionally, with 25 years of competitive motorcycle racing at the top national and global level in disciplines including the Superbike World Championship ("WorldSBK"), Crescent Racing are inarguably experts in their field.

Leading IT Services and Solutions company Blue Chip have been both a sponsor and IT partner of Crescent Racing for a decade as the company has flourished, including the recent switch of Superbike partners from Suzuki to Yamaha. Blue Chip have supported Crescent in successfully delivering a variety of IT projects, most recently upgrading them from an on-premise infrastructure to Blue Chip’s Private Cloud Platform.

As a business that is constantly busy and heavily-dependent on their IT infrastructure, Crescent could not afford to have any server downtime, yet required assistance in implementing and managing their systems. With their existing on-premise server reaching End of Support and the company’s growth meaning that their IT needs were becoming increasingly complex, it became clear that a new solution was required. They turned to longstanding IT partner Blue Chip to provide advocacy on the best option for them, Blue Chip suggested an Infrastructure as a Service provision – a highly-scalable solution which removes the requirement for customers to purchase, install and integrate components themselves. Blue Chip also implemented a Flexible Managed Service, ensuring that Crescent were fully supported 24/7, 365 days a year should any issues with other aspects of their IT arise.

Solution

The advantages of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) for Crescent Racing were numerous; for instance, their new Cloud infrastructure was hosted in one of Vodafone’s Tier 3, List X datacentres – one of only a handful in the UK, and offering maximum levels of security, resilience and failover. Migrating to the Cloud also negated the requirement for unnecessary capital expenditure to replace aged hardware, whilst removing the server from being on-premise eliminated the need for further storage space and additional overheads, such as power and cooling. This not only broke the regular cycle of 3-5 year Hardware Refresh Projects, it also eliminated the need for Crescent to recruit specialist technical staff to operate and manage their new infrastructure. With the solution being so scalable, additional capacity could be arranged on demand as Crescent Racing continued to grow.

Most importantly for a company so reliant on a dependable IT infrastructure, Blue Chip’s Gold IaaS service provides business continuity and disaster recovery facilities to a secondary datacentre via Blue Chip’s Virtual Machine Continuity Service (VMCS) to ensure that, in the unlikely event of a system failure, Crescent Racing would not suffer any data loss. Selecting the Gold IaaS service from Blue Chip also meant that Crescent had guaranteed 99.99% uptime - a factor critical for their business. Holding ISO9001 and ISO27001 accreditations, Crescent were assured that their infrastructure was in highly capable hands with Blue Chip.

Blue Chip’s Flexible Managed Service ensured that Crescent had access to IT support 24/7, 365 days a year, yet only pay for any time they used; a service which was both cost-effective and highly available. By utilising this Managed Service, Crescent had ad hoc access to services including Blue Chip’s 24/7 Service Desk entity, VIM Monitoring and a remote Service Delivery Manager, as well as more than 140 technical experts in place of employing a full-time member of staff.

Success and Company Benefits

The result of Crescent Racing’s new Infrastructure as a Service solution was that the team were confident that their infrastructure entirely taken care of, their data secure and any downtime would be minimal, allowing them to concentrate on their core business goals. Crescent have reported to be delighted to have a robust and secure IT solution which has the scalability to grow alongside their continuing expansion, as well as feeling assured that they have access to Blue Chip’s entire skillset and technical experience 24/7 should it be required.

Paul Denning at Crescent Racing said “Blue Chip listen to our business needs, and every time we work with them it feels like they are advising us, not selling to us. We can focus on the important business of winning races, safe in the knowledge that our IT is being handled by experts, 24/7.”
